F*ck Marry Kill

F*, Marry, Kill is a famous hypothetical question game where you have to choose between three people, who you would rather spend the night with, marry for life or would definitely avoid. Originally played among friends, mostly in American Colleges, at Build Up Labs we turned it into a social app, that can be played just for fun, for flirting or for dating.

FMK has a simple and addictive game-play: 3 taps and you move on to the next combination:

– The first tap is the F* vote – The one suited for a one night stand, but that you would only introduce to your parents, if you wanted to piss them off.
– The second is the Marry vote – This one is good for the long term. Cute and all, and seems like a nice person.
– The last tap is the Kill vote – Not even if you were the only two survivors of a zombie apocalypse. In fact, you would rather f* or marry a zombie.

If two people vote each other with the same intention then it’s a match and they can start chatting.

The game wast developed using React Native and then Meteor for the back-end. It has been published on the Android store but not on the iOS store because the concept doesn’t comply with the regulation. To allow also iOS users to play the game, we developed a web app using React.js based on the mobile app. The translation process was fairly quick and easy, and introduced a very little maintenance overhead, proving again the potential of the React framework.
To the develop and incrementally improve the product, we followed a lean methodology, constantly cycling through the Make, Test, Learn phases. The strategies we followed included on-campus gorilla testing, user behaviour monitoring using tools such as Google Analytics and Hotjar.

I fist work on the product as a Full-stack developer, then switch to a Product Manager position. During the period I was managing the product (October to February) I conducted some weekly iterative cycles myself and redesigned parts of the app. As a result, the weekly active grew +100%, the sessions per user +60%, and the rating on the store +12%.
